Catherine Huett Obituary

Life Reflection of Catherine H. Huett
Mrs. Catherine Helen Huett, daughter of Bennie and Sharon Burton, was born on May 25 th 1924 in
Durham North Carolina. Catherine was the last surviving child out of seven. Preceding her in death
were her four brothers, Bennie Jr., Willie Austin, Dancy and Alphonso, and two Sisters Ruth and Mary
Eliza, her husband John Huett Sr and their son John Huett Jr.
Catherine attended school at East End Graded School in Durham. The school was built in 1909 and was
the third graded school established for African American children in Durham. During that time Catherine
developed her love for softball, playing on a traveling team. She always boasted how good the team
was and how they could have been professional. One of her favorite pastimes was watching the World
Series.
Catherine met the love of her life, John W. Huett. The two married on December 31 st 1946, a union that
spanned over 60 years. From this union they were blessed with a son John Huett Jr. The couple’s love
extended to raising Ruth McCall-Miller and Lisa Burton. The family was built on love, commitment and
nurturance.
Catherine was a caregiver by nature. She took care of nieces and nephews, all the grands, great grands
and was blessed to be a great great-grandma. Some of her claims to fame were her world renowned
fried chicken and fish, her cakes from scratch, delicious apple pies and her famous turkey stuffing. She
enjoyed telling everyone what they should be doing and why…that was the boss in her.
Catherine joined New Light Beulah Baptist Church while it was under the leadership of Rev TC Kilibrew
and remained a faithful member until she moved to Virginia in 2012. Although she moved her heart
remained with Beulah. She kept up with the members and added her two cents where she felt
appropriate.
The family has truly lost an icon. Catherine leaves to mourn, Ruth McCall-Miller(Fred Miller), Lisa
Burton, daughter-in-law Marlene Huett, two sister-in-laws, Audrey Burton and Eula Mae Burton, three
granddaughters, Kameelah Nixon, Haneefah Nixon and Terreque Paige(Dwann), three grandsons, Leroy
Richardson, Montez Burton(Jasmine), and Abdullah Richardson. She also leaves to mourn 14 great-
grands and 3 great-great grands and a host of nephews, nieces and friends…..Blessed with a full life she
touched many and will be remembered by many. We are thankful for her time here.
